Examination Information
Suggested Preparation: Reading and Reviewing Materials for Examination Candidates
A review of a general text of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics would be appropriate. No one single text is absolutely recommended since the examination for physicians and non-physicians covers a broad spectrum of clinical pharmacology and related therapeutics. Examples of suitable text would be:
Basic and Clinical Pharmacology: Editor B. G. Katzung; Publ. Appleton and Lange.
Principles of Clinical Pharmacology; Atkinson, Daniels, Dedrick, Grudsinskasand Markey eds. Academic Press, 2001.
Melmon and Morrelli's Clinical Pharmacology, fourth edition, Editors: S. George Carruthers, Brian B. Hoffman, Kenneth L. Melmon, and David W. Nierenberg; published by McGraw-Hill, Medical Publishing Division, copyright 2000. (ISBN 0-07-105406-5)
Mant TGK, Lewis LD, Ritter JM. MCQ's in Clinical Pharmacology, second edition. 2001 Oxford University Press, Inc. ISBN: 0 340 76295
Reading of the current journals of Clinical Pharmacology is also recommended.

Test Centers
The ABCP certifying examinations will be administered at the centers listed below. The Board reserves the right to close a test center if the number of examinees requesting that test center does not reach a required minimum or if circumstances arise which, in the judgment of the Board, indicate that administration of the test at that center would jeopardize either the security of the examination material or the integrity of the scores derived from the examination.
- Indianapolis, IN
- Miami, FL
- San Antonio, TX
- San Francisco, CA
- Toronto, Ontario - Canada
- Washington, DC
Admission of Candidates to the Examination: Upon receipt of an applicant's completed application and fee, the credentials will be evaluated. At its discretion the Board will admit the applicant to the examination; or, if the applicant's background is found to be deficient, the Board will suggest training and/or clinical pharmacology experience. An accepted applicant (candidate) will be notified as soon as possible following the application deadline regarding his/her eligibility and assignment to an examination center. Candidates will be admitted to the examination upon presentation of appropriate picture ID.
Scoring the Examination: In this type of examination no candidate is expected to know the correct answer to every question. Even if the candidate is not familiar with all aspects of a particualr question, he/she should answer all questions since there is no additional penalty for a wrong answer. Double answers and blank answers are treated as incorrect answers.
Reporting of Scores: Candidates will receive score reports with normative data, by mail, approximately three months after the examination date. The mailing address listed in item #3 of the application will be used.
Intergrity of Scores: If, as evidenced by observation or statistical analysis of answer sheets, giving or obtaining unauthorized information or aid has occurred, a candidate's scores will be invalidated and other appropriate action will be taken.
All candidates for these examinations must acknowledge that they are aware of these regulations for maintaining the integrity of individual scores by signing the statement included in the examination book.
